The company was founded in 1901 by landowner Johann Seltmann and his younger brother Christian Seltmann, who had learned the porcelain craft. Due to differences of opinion about the future of the company - Johann wanted to found a stock corporation - Christian Seltmann left in 1910 and founded the Seltmann Weiden company, which is still family-owned today.

Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß was the most important employer in the city with at times 600 employees. In 1993, Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß merged with the manufacturers Schirnding and Kronester to form SKV Porzellan-Union GmbH (bankruptcy in 2013). Production in Vohenstrauß was stopped in 1996.
